Pellet stove maintenance

How a pellet stove should be cleaned

If you have already had a chance to talk to a pellet stove owner, they will already have told you that cleaning it is just as easy as using it. While wood stoves and fireplaces generate a lot of ash and create more dirt, in pellet stoves combustion is more regulated and creates very little ash, especially when certified pellets are used. That is why routine maintenance operations of pellet products do not take longer than few minutes.

Here is some useful advice.

How to clean the inside of the stove

Cleaning the stove's firebox is an operation that should be performed more or less every 1-2 days. The frequency of cleaning depends on the type of pellets you use (if it is certified it burns better and leaves less residues) and on the hours of operation of the stove.

Cleaning the brazier is important to assure proper air flow into the combustion chamber and thus assure flawless operation of the product. A normal vacuum cleaner is usually enough to remove the ash. If there is scaling, the brazier must be removed from its seat and all the holes and the grate must be thoroughly cleaned.

How to clean the stove glass

Cleaning the glass is important, not just for proper operation, but rather to have a clear and fine view of the flame. If the pellets are good quality and installation was performed correctly, only a little ash is deposited on the glass, which is easily removed with a dry paintbrush.

When scaling occurs, you may use a neutral glass spray that contains no abrasives. However, it should be used in small amounts and must not be sprayed on the stove's painted parts nor on the ceramic fibre seal of the fire door, parts which might be easily damaged.

The obligatory annual servicing

More thorough extraordinary maintenance must be carried out by an authorised technician once a year. The technician will clean the flue, check the tightness of the seals, remove all residue from inside the stove (feed screw, fan, turbulators), check the smoke emission and electromechanical components.
