Steel and stone

Interesting contrasts in the renovation of a country house

Umbria, Italy: a rural house, surrounded by verdant countryside, to be restored and extended. Two restaurateurs who love the authenticity of their native land, but don’t disdain contemporary design. And what really makes the project successful: the fireplace, encapsulating this dual spirit – modern and yet traditional and conservative.

Placed exactly at the centre of the ample living area, this fireplace is the perfect partition between the sitting room and the kitchen. Its beauty and warmth can be enjoyed in both rooms, thanks to its double-fronted opening.

The model chosen is the closed wood-burning fireplace Forma B95 by MCZ. It is available in ducted version also, in order to heat more rooms in the same time. In this case, it is used to heat with natural convection the wide open space. Hot air circulates naturally, from two diffusers on the sides of the cladding made in natural stone.

We chose a stone cladding, typical of rural tradition, reinterpreted in a contemporary aesthetic frame. First and foremost, in formal terms: the fireplace is compounded of two sober, rectangular monoliths, in line with the latest trends. -  Architect Giulio Morra Moretti

We highlighted its modernity by choosing a brushed-steel flue, which soars up the double height of the ambience, making a strong visual statement – especially when  bathed in artificial light. -  Architect Giulio Morra Moretti

The role of the flue is not merely aesthetic, but also functional: along with the fireplace, it contributes to warming the ample surrounding ambience and the gallery above.
